Joinery

Dado and rabbet (dado_rabbet) — Case corners. House the top and bottom into the sides. Sides are the full 32 in height. Size the dado in the joinery assistant.

Dado (dado) — Divider. Divider is stopped at the back so it does not trap the back panel.

Back (rabbet) — Sides, top, and bottom. Rabbet 0.375 in wide by 0.25 in deep. Do not glue a solid back across the grain.

Mortise and tenon, door (mortise_tenon) — Door frames. Stiles run the full door height. Rails are tenoned. Glass sits in a groove with clearance — do not glue it.

Peg hanger (peg_hanger) — Back, near the top. The hanger must miss the movement and must not pin the back's edges.

Build sequence

  1. Mill stock to finished thickness.
  2. Cut case parts and the joinery.
  3. Dry-fit the case.
  4. Glue the case square. Diagonals of the case must be equal.
  5. Fit the back so the edges can move.
  6. Build the doors or the dial bezel.
  7. Hang the doors and fit the glass.
  8. Mount the movement and the dial.
  9. Finish.
  10. Hang the clock. Check that the pendulum clears.
